Traveling with the Grobmyers…again

On the road again….. we headed out of town for a quick weekend getaway. This time we are headed to Lafayette, Indiana. You know us we can’t just drive straight somewhere we had to make some detours along the way. You might be asking why Lafayette Indiana. Well, there was a spring regional meet for the Midwest A.C. Gilbert Heritage Society.  Joe wanted to go check it out so I tagged along.

Thursday night we stayed in Bowling Green, Ky home of Western Kentucky University. We were on the edge of campus and this greeted us in the lobby.

Bowling Green is home of the corvette factory and the National Corvette Museum. Not far up the road is Abraham Lincoln’s boyhood home. I gave Joe a choice of which place he wanted to go to and he picked Lincoln. So we headed for Hodgenville and Lincoln’s birthplace.

This was a cool picture of Lincoln made out of pennies.

The Lincoln family Bible.

Check out the Lincoln family lineage; the Wright Brothers and the Bush presidents, along with Robert Frost and Tennessee Williams.

This building houses the log cabin. There are 56 steps leading to the top to represent the 56 years Lincoln lived.
The cornerstone was set in 1909.

President Roosevelt laid the cornerstone in 1909 and the monument was dedicated by President Taft in 1911.

The Lincoln family cabin. You can kinda see how small the cabin was on the inside.

We drove on to Lafayette to meet some of the members for the Early Bird dinner special. Saturday morning I dropped Joe off with his Gilbert toys and drove to Monticello, Indiana to meet a friend at a quilt shop. The Quilted Bee is a new shop.they have been open for little over a year. The owner greeted us and was so helpful and friendly. My friend is a regular there and I can see why.

Because it was my first trip in the store I got a goodie bag. Just like going to a birthday party. I checked it out when I got home. There’s some good stuff I can’t wait to try out. If I’m ever in the area again I will be stopping back in to see what’s new.

I went back and picked Joe back up and our next stop was Mark’s Feed Store in Louisville, Ky. If you are ever in Louisville you need to go check them out out. We have been stopping in there for 30 years. We basically get the same thing every time. Why change a good thing. We always start with the onion straws which are so good. I get the pulled pork sandwich with their corn on the cob. The corn is deep fried! Joe always get their burgoo. And usually some comes home with us too.

Louisville is getting ready for the 150th Running to the Roses that will take place Saturday.

We made it home and the laundry is done. Monday starts another work week around here.
