Boy today was a full day. We checked another National Park off our list, Congaree National Park. You might be saying to yourself I’ve never heard of it. Well I saw a report just last week it is in the top 10 list of least visited National Parks. They receive about 250,000 visitors a year. I think I know why. Congaree is a swamp!! But it is also home to some of the largest tree. The national champion loblolly pine is there at 170 ft tall. It is also home to a lot of other things too, alligators, spiders!, snakes!!!, birds and otters. The park in 1975 became Congaree National Swamp Monument. It became a National Park in 2003. It is also a firefly preserve.
Walking up to the visitor’s center there were lots of very intricate spider webs. I did not take any pictures because we don’t like spiders. Joe took a nice hike. I walked a short distance see first paragraph for why I did not go further. These are some of his pictures he took so you can see the swamp.
If you notice in the first picture the little short post. These are around a cypress tree. Scientists are not really sure what they are for but believe that they help anchor the big tree. They are called knees.
I got a firefly for my National Park tree.
I found my first quilt shop in Summerville.
We also got a recommendation for places to eat from some friends that were here in the spring. One was Page’s Okra Grill. We found one location not too far from the quilt shop so we headed over for luper. It did not disappoint. The seafood was fresh and the okra was perfect. Thanks Sara.
When we finished with lunch we drove over to see the Angel Oak. This is supposed to be to be the oldest tree in the country. It’s huge. They have some of the limbs propped up. It’s a beautiful tree.
We saw this interesting Crepe Myrtle tree today covered with Spanish moss.
Patriots Point is across the road as the crow flies. The USS Yorktown is there. We drove over after they had closed to take some pictures from afar.
There was also a memorial to Gold Star Families.
We are here in Charleston for two night. Tomorrow we have two tours so that should be fun.i a,so have found a Christmas shop. Good night.
