Traveling with the Grobmyers Days 10 & 11 July 9 & 10

Today was a repositioning day. We headed up to York, PA which out final destination. This is the site of this years ACGHS show. The show begins Saturday but there are a few other event before. There’s also a lot of fun things to do in the area.

But to get to York we had to drive north around Washington DC and Baltimore. Keep in mind it was the middle of the day on a random Wednesday and traffic was still bumper to bumper 4 lanes wide. I could not live here and drive this every day. The traffic would kill me.

Part of the reason we drove this way was so we could stops G &W Restaurant. Joe discovered this place about 30 years ago from the locals on one of his trips up here for work. He says they have the best crab cakes anywhere.

That was all we did on Wednesday. We just relaxed in our hotel room once we arrived.

We made up for yesterday being a slow day today.

We started the morning with breakfast at a dinner just up the street.

Then on to Turkey Hill Experience. This was something fun I found when researching our trip. We don’t have Turkey Hill convince stores at home but I do think you can find the ice cream.

We got to make our own flavor of ice cream today. Everyone starts with a vanilla base.

The smaller bottles on the front row are the flavorings. They had just about everything you could think of.

This is the inclusion wall of mix ins. Just about everything you could think of.

The large bottles in the back were the swirl ins.  Again all kinds of flavors to chose from.

I used cake batter flavoring and added pecans and coconut stir ins.

I did both peach and strawberry swirl ins.

My final product. It was very good.  Mr Vanilla made a coffee, coconut, cappuccino flavored, espresso pillows and coconut mix in and chocolate swirl ice cream.

Our instructor for the class.

They had free samples of these flavors today all you wanted. We were ice creamed out after making our flavors.

This was a lot of fun. This was the 4th ice cream place we have toured but the first we got to make our own flavor.

From there we drove over to President James Buchanan’s house. We are trying to visit all the President’s houses and libraries. This was a really nice tour with a great tour guide.

A little background on Buchanan. He had been both senator and representative from PA, Secretary of State, ambassador to both England and Russia. Was nominated for the SupremeCourt  three times. For the three elections before the one he won he thought he would get nominated. By the time he was nominated he was ready to retire and go home. He never married. His niece Harriet Lane and nephew James BuchananHenry both lived with him when their parents died. Harriet’s died when she was 11 and Henry’s when he was older. Harriet joined Buchanan in DC as his official hostess. The term First Lady was given to her for the first time.

This is the Buchanan china. Harriet bought the pink in Europe when she was there while he was ambassador. This was their personal china that they took to Washington with them. Notice above the two sided gravy boat.

Top picture is of Buchanan. Bottom picture of Harriet in later life.

Buchanan’s desk that he took to Washington. It has made its way back to the family.

This is called a top hat bath tub.

These are pictures of Harriet’s room. The doll was made from wedding dress.

These quilts are Amish quilts that were in the museum next to the house.

I found another Christmas shop. It has a little bit of everything and none of the trees were decorated yet. It was a nice shop.

Our final stop of the day I have been waiting for this since I heard where the show was going to be this year.we stopped at Primanti Bros. I love this place. I wish we had one at home.

Primanti’s was started in 1933 in Pittsburgh. The sandwiches were topped with fried potatoes and a handful of slaw. That tradition continues today. These are the best sandwiches. The white bread is soft but durable to hold together.

Tomorrow I think I might head to Lancaster to find some quilt shops.
