Traveling with the Grobmyers August 5,2024 No bears!

So today was suppose to be full of bears at the waterfall. But… so we had an early wake up call this morning. We were to arrive at Katmai Air at 7:15 this morning. We were there checked in and waited for our flight time. Now I wasn’t too sure about this plane.

Tiny plane that bounced around a little on the flight. We landed in King Salmon. Now King Salmon is a little town with a visitor’s center, saloon, and Wells Fargo bank. Along with several chartered flight companies. They picked us up and took us to a log cabin where we were to catch the float plane. Inside they had the big screen tv in the explore app with the bear cam. No bears. We waited for a while and the staff didn’t make any moves to get us organized to board the two float planes outside. Finally, I guess they paper, rock, scissored to see who would come out and tell us the flights had been grounded. They wind came in sooner than they thought it would and no flights would be taking off today to head to Brooks. They offered to take us back up to “town” while they tried to figure out how to get us back to Anchorage. We went into the visitor’s center to get our passport stamped. The went to Sockeyed Saloon for lunch. Only place in town. The guy found all of us there and told us to be back at the airport area by 1. Anyway we made it back to Anchorage about three. Full refund. There were only two bears all day at the falls so I wasn’t too disappointed. We just wished they had told us before we flew over to King Salmon. The weather was beautiful in Anchorage. We savaged the day with a trip to the botanical gardens.

This is a screenshot this afternoon of the falls. Last week there was 10-15 bears there. This gives us a reason to come back.

I’m glad we were able to go to the botanical gardens. They are beautiful and the weather was perfect. It is cool, low humidity and a slight breeze.

When we finished with the gardens we weren’t hungry for dinner because we had a filling lunch so what do you do…you go get ice cream. Back to Wild Scoops again.

This is what I tried today. It was good but I think I liked the rhubarb crumble better.

Take a guess what he got.

Tomorrow we head south toward Seward. We are going to try and stop at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. We are determined to see animals one way or the other. The ride the tram up to the Alyeska Resort. Have lunch up there and enjoy the view.
