It’s July 1st and you know what that means? It’s closer to….football season!!! I know you were thinking I was going to say Christmas. The only thing other than Christmas that I count down is football season. I found out today it is about 49 days. So today is all about football.
We left Helen this morning and meandered our way down two lane roads through small towns. We commented that we don’t always take the most direct route but it usually s interesting. We saw neat small towns with pretty old homes and more American flags. We saw murals on walls and a few barn quilts too.
First stop today was Clemson, South Carolina home to the Clemson Tigers. Too much orange for our taste but they do have a neat stadium. We can add Memorial Stadiums to our list now.
Now if you watch Clemson football games you might have heard of Howard’s rock. In the 60’s some alumni brought this rock back from Death Valley California and gifted it to Coach Frank Howard. He initially used it as a doorstop. Later it was moved to the top of “The Hill”. Then the tradition of players rubbing the rock for luck as they ran down to the field. The rock was moved to this location in 67.
Now they had these cool paw prints painted on the road around campus. I really wish we had elephant paw prints around Tuscaloosa.
We looked for Dabo around campus and didn’t see him but we did find this statue of the Tiger.
And yes we wore crimson today.
We found a visitor’s center and it is orientation time. Lots of sad looking parents and apprehensive teens. They had these cool rings outside.
And an orange baby grand.
Leaving Clemson we hit the interstate which made it seem if we were moving faster but a lot less interesting things to see.
Cue “Sandstorm”
For those that might not watch South Carolina football they play the song “Sandstorm” as the players are entering the stadium. I’ve heard it has registered on the Richter scale. Shane Beamer didn’t come out to meet us either. I felt sure he would want to talk with me about the upcoming season.
We walked around the stadium and it was very nice. They are doing some work to get ready for the season. We did get a Roll Tide while we were there.
They have this area around the stadium with cabooses that they use for tailgating. It seems like a great place to be on Saturdays in the fall.
We then met some friends for lunch at Pawley’s Front Porch. Then we checked out a couple local stores Joe found and was interested in. After that we headed to the hotel.
Tomorrow we head south and check something else off out list. See you tomorrow.
