Today was our historic walking tour of Charleston, South of Broad. To say it was hot is an understatement. Of course it’s not the heat it’s the humidity. You could cut the air with a knife. The tour was with Bulldog Tours and if you are in the area schedule one of the many tours with them. Charleston is a very old city parts date back to the late 1600’s. It was very involved in both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Oh and they love George Washington. They have markers at all the places he visited and stayed. Lincoln never visited the city. He was scheduled to come but Mary Todd was not feeling well so he stayed home and went to Ford Theater instead. And as they say the rest is history. Charlestonians like to say had he visited he would have lived to finish his presidency.
This is St Michael’s church. It is very old and still holds services today. It is used for a lot of weddings. Beautiful stained glass windows.
This is the VIP pew. Notice the comfy seats. VIPs that have sat here range from Washington to Princess Charles. Our tour guide said the locals don’t sit there so if you are in town for Sunday come and sit in the seat and watch the reaction.
Home of the 1st governor who was married to Aaron Burr’s daughter.
Beautiful homes and businesses.
These home are along the wall that was built in the harbor to help protect it.
Rainbow Row. Very popular tourist attraction. They were going to tear down this row of houses because they were in bad shape, but a group of women said no you are not. The group gave the women some time and they came up with a plan to revitalize them. Each woman picked a color to paint one of the houses. This is what resulted.
Our tour ended here at the Blind Tiger restaurant. Our tour guide and my friend both recommended it.we mainly wanted a cool place and something cold to drink.
After lunch and heading back to our car I found my Christmas shop for the day.
We had a late afternoon tour of Fort Sumter scheduled, but it was thundering so we didn’t think it would be a good idea to be on the water going over. We did go to the visitors center.
We did find the pineapple fountain along the waterfront.
We drove out to try and see the grove of live oaks at a plantation to get some pictures but you had to do a tour to see that so we didn’t stay.we drove out to Sullivan’s Island because Joe found a place for dinner, The Obstinate Daughter. I don’t know why that jumped out at him.
Tomorrow we will leave the area and head up the coast. I’m sure we will find some 4th of July fireworks somewhere along the way. We will be coming back here again one day. It’s a very nice city that is full of American history.
